Vol. 8, No. 6 — February 15, 2019

David Alban Appointed President

David Alban was appointed President of Ring Power Corporation, effective January 15, 2019. He has assumed day-to-day leadership of the company. Randal L. Ringhaver remains Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

”Ring Power is fortunate to have a strong, young group of leaders, prepared to position the company to keep pace with the ever-changing business climate and rapidly evolving technology, today and into the future, said Randy. “In concert with Caterpillar, David will focus on growing the company, continue to provide excellent service, and maintain customer relationships.”

David has progressed in various leadership roles since joining Ring Power in 2001. After a successful stint in Heavy Equipment Rental and Sales, he was promoted to Agriculture Sales Manager.

David’s professional growth at Ring Power expanded in 2004 as he went through Six Sigma training and was elected Assistant Vice President, Six Sigma Black Belt. His development continued with a promotion as Vice President and Corporate Secretary of Lift Trucks in 2009.

In 2010, David was elected Vice President, Heavy Equipment Service Operations North, and elected to the Ring Power Board of Directors and Corporate Secretary. Additional responsibilities would later include Vice President, Power Systems Product Support operations, and then in 2012, he was elected Executive Vice President of Sales and Corporate Secretary.  The following year his role was expanded to include responsibility for Product Support for Heavy Equipment and Training.  In 2014, David’s responsibilities as Executive Vice President and Corporate Secretary added oversight of Product Support for Heavy Equipment and Power Systems, Training, Human Resources, Facilities and Phoenix Products.

Since 2015, he has been leading from his most recent position as Chief Operating Officer.

Profit Sharing Contribution Announced

Since the very beginning of Ring Power Corporation, the owners have remained focused on building a secure future for our employees when they reach their retirement years.  One of the continuous strengths of our company has been the investment in the Profit Sharing Plan and the 401k plan.

We are proud to provide these tax deferred retirement fund plan benefits as a testament to the success we achieve as a result of the hard work and dedication of our employees.  It is true that we offer many products to serve our customers, but it is our employees who provide excellent service that bring our customers back for repeat business.  The Profit Sharing and 401k plans allow our employees to share in the profits of the company, as they participate in building their future.  We are proud of the fact that in most years since the inception of the Profit Sharing Plan originating in 1963, the company has contributed to the Plan.  The Board of Directors is pleased to announce they have approved a contribution in the amount of $5,000,000 at their annual meeting in January for the 2018 plan year.  This contribution is the second largest in the plan's history.  This performance and contribution were possible with the tremendous effort of all employees to make our company profitable last year. In 2018, Ring Power employees contributed $10,428,000 to their 401k plans with the company making a 50 percent match up to a maximum of 7 percent . For the 2019 plan year, the 401k plan employee company match will continue at 50 percent up to a maximum of 7 percent.

We continue with aggressive business goals for 2019, but we feel our goals can be attained through our employee team efforts to keep our company one of the most successful in the industry.  Sustained growth and success will continue to have a positive impact on our employees, as historically shown by the reinvestment of our profits back into the company and to the employees.

New Officer Appointments

At the Board of Directors meeting Jan. 15, Ryan Stallings was named Director of Cat Rental Store Operations and elected to the Ring Power Board of Directors.

A graduate of Florida State University, Stallings joined Ring Power as a sales coordinator for the Cat Rental Store’s Sarasota branch in September 2005 and quickly advanced to account manager, serving at several branches over the next several years.  In 2012, he was named Challenger (agriculture equipment) division manager, based out of Ring Power’s corporate headquarters in St. Augustine, Florida. Two years later, he was appointed Vice President and named Cat Rental Store East Coast Sales Manager. Since 2017, he has served as Vice President, Cat Rental Store General Manager.

This change is being made in an effort to ensure that Ring Power leaders are having ongoing value-added discussions regarding performance with all members of their team.  Additionally, this change will help ensure individual performance is considered when making decisions regarding annual merit based increases.

United Way Giving Campaign Update

Our annual Employee Giving campaign contributions have been tallied. This year employees pledged a whopping $101,202.60! With Ring Power matching contributions at 50 percent, the grand total raised stands at $151,803.90! Thank you to everyone who donated!

Below is a breakdown of this year’s contributions.

Security Corner: What is Phishing?

Phishing starts with a fraudulent email or other communication that is designed to lure a victim. The message is made to look as though it is coming from a trusted sender. If it fools the victim, he or she is coaxed into providing confidential information, often on a scam website. Hackers or what the industry calls “Threat Actors” can make them look like they came from someone or something you know, such as a friend or a trusted company you frequently use. They could even add logos of your bank or forge the email address so the message appears more legitimate.

Phishing is a type of attack that uses email or a messaging service to fool you into taking an action you should not take, such as clicking on a malicious link, sharing your password, or opening an infected email attachment. Attackers work hard to make these messages convincing and tap your emotional triggers, such as urgency or curiosity. Attackers then send these messages to millions of people. They do not know who will take the bait, all they know is the more they send, the more people will fall victim.

Protecting Yourself

In almost all cases, opening and reading an email or message is fine. For a phishing attack to work, the bad guys need to trick you into doing something. Fortunately, there are clues that a message is an attack. Here are the most common ones:

A tremendous sense of urgency that demands “immediate action” before something bad happens, like threatening to close an account or send you to jail. The attacker wants to rush you into making a mistake.

Pressuring you to bypass or ignore your policies or procedures at work.

Requesting highly sensitive information, such as your credit card number, password, or any other information that a legitimate sender should already know.

The message says it comes from an official organization, but has poor grammar or spelling or uses a personal email address like @gmail.com.

The message comes from an official email (such as your boss) but has a Reply-To address going to someone’s personal email account.

Ultimately, common sense is your best defense. If an email or message seems odd, suspicious, or too good to be true, it may be a phishing attack. Remember to use the Phishing Alert button that is part of our email system. This will allow our IT team to analyze the email to disguinsh if it’s a phishing email or not. Either way you are being proactive in helping Ring Power become more secure.

Safety Corner: Introducing tEXT4SAFETY

by Steve Brown

Safety Director

As you have heard me say in this space before, driving is perhaps the most risky thing most of us do.  Ring Power cares about the safety of the nearly 1,000 employees that drive as a part of their employment with Ring Power, so last month drivers began to receive a daily driving safety message.  These daily messages are delivered via text message to the company phones of holders of Ring Power Vehicle Licenses (RVLs) shortly after the start of the work day.  The focus initially will be to review the 5 Keys of the Smith System driving principles taught in our driver’s training program, aimed at avoiding the most common causes of accidents.

Studies have shown that short text messages is the best way to deliver content that can then be read when the driver is able.  In today’s fast-paced world, text messages are the most often read medium, more so than email, voice mail or even a phone call.  From a safety perspective, Ring Power expects all employees to comply with our cell phone policy which prohibits any use of text or email while driving, so the messages are timed to arrive when most drivers are not on the road, but if they are, THEY CAN WAIT!

In addition to the daily safety reminder, Ring Power will have the ability to send messages to a given area, such as a weather alert if needed.  Stay tuned for more information on this new way Ring Power is seeking to make safety a way of life.  Safely Home.  Every Day.  Every One.
